Instructors who want to take advantage of all Online@UT has to offer should explore the ITC workshops. In addition to a comprehensive suite of Course Management System (CMS) workshops, there are also workshops on digital media, productivity tools, learning theory and practice, and much more.

What Are Your Training Needs?

I am new to teaching with technology or I'm new to the University of Tennessee, and I'm anxious to get started.

CMS 110: Introduction to Online@UT.
In order to become a certified Online@UT user, you must complete this workshop, which can be accomplished in a face-to-face workshop or online.

Workshop Description
The purpose of the online component is to give you, the future course instructor or organization facilitator, experience as a student or organization member. This may be the only time you are on this side of Online@UT. After this class you will be able to develop sites for your courses or organizations.

Objectives
Upon completing this Workshop you will be able to:

  • Navigate the course interface,
  • Complete an online survey,
  • Develop your Student Homepage for this course site,
  • Post a message in the discussion forum,
  • Send a file to the instructors via the digital drop box,
  • Email instructors from the Communications area,
  • Complete an online quiz, and
  • Check your grade in the online gradebook

ITC Workshop Registration

CMS 110 OL may be taken in lieu of the required two-hour CMS 110 workshop.
However, in order to become a certified Online@UT user, online participants will be required to complete all assignments satisfactorily within one week of first gaining access to the course.
Only faculty, graduate teaching associates / assistants (GTAs), and staff with teaching responsibilities can be CMS-certified. GAs and other staff may take this workshop, but will not be entered into the certification database.

Because CMS 110 OL is delivered completely online, we ask that only experienced computer users register for it. In order to complete the required tasks, you will be expected to:

  • Work simultaneously in two browser windows
  • Copy and paste text from a word processor (for example, Microsoft Word)
  • Browse in your operating system (using, for example, Windows Explorer) to find a document stored on your computer
  • Download files from the Internet and save them to your computer

If you are unfamiliar with these tasks, we ask that you instead register for CMS 110, the two-hour, face-to-face workshop.

Are you ready to incorporate online assessment into your course site?

CMS 113: Online@UT's Assessment Tools
Assessment is a critical component of the educational experience. Blackboard's assessment tools offer instructors many opportunities to engage their students and assess their mastery of content.

This workshop will offer you strategies, examples of best practice, and the skills you need to use the assessment tool well to enhance student learning.

As a result of taking this workshop, you will be able to:

Identify tools within Online@UT for testing, grading, and general assessment

  • Test Manager
  • Question Types
  • Pool Manager
  • Online Gradebook
Use the tools identified above to build and launch assessments
  • Create a quiz in the Test Manager
  • Use a Quiz Generator to convert questions into pools
  • Deploy tests effectively within content areas
  • Utilize the Pool Manager to add flexibility to your assessment strategies
  • Import and export grades into Excel for data analysis

My department needs some specialized training. For example, we would all like to become CMS Certified together.

The Innovative Technology Center offers free, specialized training to UTK faculty, graduate students, and staff who are directly involved in teaching. To schedule a Lucky 7, your group must include at least 7, but no more than 16 faculty, GTA's, and / or staff directly involved in teaching.

Note: If you are interested in taking a workshop that is not being offered in the immediate future, find some friends, and we will schedule a Lucky 7.

I would like more exposure to online teaching.
