SafeAssign in Online@UT: A How-To Guide

About SafeAssign | Student Submission Process | Accessing and Interpreting Results

How Do Students Submit Their Papers to SafeAssign?

So glad you asked! Instructions are below. Additionally, we've conducted several pilot groups throughout the fall and early spring semesters. In the course of those pilots, we learned several things that are important to a successful deployment of SafeAssign in Online@UT courses. Most of the problems students experienced had to do with file types and file names. We suggest that all instructors using SafeAssignments in their courses post the following text as an item in the content area into which they will deploy the SafeAssignments. Doing so will help eliminate potential problems and frustration for you and your students.

SafeAssign Submission Tips

  • Office 2007 documents saved natively with the .docx extension are not supported. If you are using Office 2007, use the "Save File As...97-2003 Document" option from the file menu.
  • Certain special characters are not allowed in file names within Blackboard's software. Use only letters (A-Z or a-z), numbers (0-9), dashes (-), or underscores (_) in the name of the file.
  • Use a standard file naming convention (e.g. LastName_1.doc).
  • We also recommend using the Firefox browser, especially on the Mac platform.
  • If you have submission difficulty after making the above corrctions, you may need to reset your Internet browser by cleraing your cache and cookies. You should also be sure that your browser is not blocking popup windows.
  • If you have tried all of this, and still have difficulty, complete the Help form located at http://online.utk.edu/contact.

Submitting Your Paper to SafeAssign

  1. Select the content area in which the SafeAssignment is located.
  2. Select the View/Complete link located below the SafeAssignment and its instructions.
  3. Attach your paper by clicking on the Browse button and choosing your paper from your computer or jump drive.
  4. Submit your paper by clicking on the Submit button.
  5. Check on the status of your submission by going to My Grades via the Course Tools. If there is an exclamation mark where your grade should be, your paper has been received.
  6. When your SafeAssignment has been graded, go to My Grades via Course Tools. In addition to seeing your grade, you may also be able to view the SafeAssign report if your instructor has made that an available option.
