What You Should Know About Handling Intellectual Property
of Faculty, Staff, and Students

General Policy
All materials placed on the Online@UT servers by faculty and students are governed by the general intellectual property policy of UT Knoxville.

  • Online@UT is intended solely for support for teaching and learning at UT Knoxville.
  • No use will be made of any materials posted by instructors and students within Online@UT other than those intended by the instructor teaching the course.
  • The instructor teaching the course is responsible for informing students about the use he or she will make of materials that students post on the system.
Suggested Procedures for Archival and Use of Student Work
  • If a student produces work for a course, an instructor may ask for permission to use this work as an example with another course. However, the instructor should take all precautions and initiative to protect the student's privacy by removing identifying information (name, Net-ID, etc.) from the paper, discussion posting, etc.

  • If an instructor wishes to use content from a course for research or publication, they MUST obtain permission from the students prior to releasing any data. This use falls into the realm of the Office of Research and as such is governed by their policies and procedures.
